YORUBA IBEJI ORISHA AND PRACTICE

Yoruba sculptures, with few exceptions are from Nigeria. Yoruba carving for the Oba of Republic of Dahome (renamed Benin Republic) was a center for Yoruba woodcarving until mid late 1950’s. Togo and Ghana produced Yoruba woodcarvings as well, but extremely limited in practice. PRESS THIS BUTTON TO RETURN TO THE PREVIOUS PAGE PRESS THIS BUTTON TO MOVE FORWARD TO A PREVIOUS PAGE

I have seen evidence of Ere Ibeji carving from Ghana. I had a student that had a carving from there. The style was different from the ones carved in Nigeria, but there was enough of the Yoruba characteristics to distinguish an Ere Ibeji from the rest of Ghanaian culture manifestations.
